August 5th Work Party - changed to Sunday
The 27th Delmarva Folk Festival is coming up September 28-29, which quickly approaching! We are planning a work party this Sunday. If you have them, bring a rake, pruners or clippers and work gloves because we are going to clear paths of the greenbriar and limbs.

Also, pack yourself enough water, bug spray and some foods to keep you going. Afterwards, there may be a jam session, just a spontaneous thing if people are up for it!

Delaware Friends of Folk are pleased to present the first of two preliminary events in their 12th annual Delmarva Folk Heroes contest. The open mic show will be held in conjunction with the July 21 coffee house. The event begins at 7:30 pm in the Bennett Chapel at Wesley College in Dover. Sign-up will start at 7:00 and each performer will get 15-20 minutes on the Friends of Folk stage. A second open mic show will be held on August 18.

Ballots will be distributed for the audience to vote for their favorite performer and three finalists from each evening will be selected by those present. The finalists will each get a performance slot on Friday night, September 28, at the Delmarva Folk Festival. Again that evening, the audience will vote for their favorite, and the winner will be named the 12th Delmarva Folk Hero. Prizes include $100 cash, the opening performance spot the next day for the 26th annual Delmarva Folk Festival, an invitation to appear live with Mark Rogers on WSTW's Hometown Heroes show, and more.

Performers
should present a genre similar to the ones typically presented by Delaware Friends of Folk – folk (traditional, new, or “singer songwriter”), bluegrass, blues, Americana, Celtic, jazz, New Age, World, old-time, roots, and story-telling, preferably using acoustic instruments. To simplify changeovers, acts should be no more than five performers, with a strong preference toward fewer members in any act. No drum kits and no pre-recorded accompaniment please.

Admission is $5 for members of Delaware Friends of Folk and $7 for non-members. Performers and those 12 and under are admitted free. Fresh-brewed coffee, baked cookies and other snacks will be available. Delaware Friends of Folk are partially supported by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on

What is FOLK MUSIC? I always like to say "Music that FOLKS play", but that doesn't always work for people. Basically, what I think of is a few people on a porch, in a village or common area playing, singing & dancing to their own ethnic traditional music. Singing songs that they know by heart, passed down from others before them. Follow this link for a great little explanation for kids, I really think that this sums it up without being overly technical. ~ Jan Crumpley

foodbank
At all of our events, we support the Food Bank of Delaware. Please bring a non-perishable food donation to help the Food Bank of Delaware eliminate hunger in our area.
Bring goods to our upcoming Coffee House and receive a free ticket to a future Coffee House performance! The Food Bank needs not only non-perishable food, but also new (in a sealed package) personal care items that are not covered by food stamps.
